Gary Inman sent me this picture this morning showing a few deer making their way into the fields searching for that first bit of “green up”. He says that reports are as many as 50 deer have been spotted in this one site this spring.
After one of the snowiest winters on record, some hunters are heaving a sigh of relief to see that not all the deer suffered.

The following is a link that will take you to a photo journal of Paul Cyr who traveled along with a group from Maine on a day of monitoring bears deep in their winter dens.
This is well worth the click to get over there as the pictures are quite incredible and the cubs at the age seldom seen by humans.
Thanks to Paul Cyr for sharing his photos and a link.

Who’s got information on this deer picture? I can’t find anything on Snopes but I didn’t spend a lot of time looking around. Of course we all know there are such things as black deer, I believe they are called melanistic. The email I got with this photo in it says it was in Michigan.
I remember a year or so ago, a good-sized black buck was taken in Pennsylvania.

I have a series of 17 photographs that arrived in my inbox the other day. The title said it was a Canadian National Railroad train stuck in the snow in Northern Maine. I think it looks like Northern Maine, I believe it looks like a CN train and I know that white stuff is snow.
For obvious reasons I didn’t post all the pictures on this page. Click this link and view the entire gallery of 17 photos.

This is great. The photo below was taken by my good friend Gary Inman. Yes, he is the son of chief photographer Milt Inman. I spoke with Gary on the phone the other day and filed a request. I said, “Gary, send me a picture from your assortment of unusual photos that would get readers asking some questions.” So here it is.

On Saturday when I went to Plant City, Florida to pick up Milt Inman, our chief photographer, I also ran into Sayward Lamb, who is a contributing writer for U.S. Hunting Today. He wanted to show me some photos he had been sent from a friend of a somewhat rare albino moose. He had some concerns about copyright infringements but I had him forward them on to me.
I did a little research on the photos and it didn’t take long to discover the photos have been out for a while and so far claims have the moose in Montana and New Hampshire. The email Mr. Lamb received had stated the photos were taken in New Hampshire as is also claimed at this website.
Looking a bit further, I found the website of KTVB.com in Idaho, stating the photos were taken in Montana. A quick search at Snopes.com turned up nothing. Perhaps the below photos haven’t been around that long.
Either way, thanks to Mr. Lamb, I’ll go ahead and post the photos for your enjoyment.

My brother-in-law just sent me this photo that appeared in a local media outlet showing downtown Atlanta, Georgia when the tornado hit there recently. The tall building to the far left is the Bank of America building and he lives about 2 blocks from that.

My very good friend Steve Lane from Maine sent me the following photos after a weekend outing of snowmobiling around the Millinocket area. Steve sends along a warning to would be snowmobilers out for a springtime ride.
Tell your readers to use caution while sledding on the chain of lakes fed by the west branch (Penobscot). They have started releasing water from Rip Dam and the pumping stations are running on Ambajesus and Millinocket lake. There is quite a bit of slush under the surface crust on Millinocket Lake.

These are pretty remarkable photographs of which I have very little information. Can’t find anything on Snopes or Truth or Fiction. This is the caption that came with the photos.
“This is Brooks Falls just upstream from where the Brooks River flows into Naknek Lake in the Katami National Monument, Alaska. Have you ever seen a Wolf fish for salmon?”
Real? Photo Shopped? Got any info?

*Update* - March 13, 2008 8:21 a.m.
It seems that since I was sent the photos, these weren’t taken on Lake Huron. Snopes has more on the real story behind this and a lot more photographs too. Check it out here.
I received these photos and a brief explanation yesterday from a reader in Michigan. I found the photos to be remarkable and thought I would take a few minutes to share with you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gee, this global warming thing is really something……
Michigan has had the coldest winter in decades. Water expands to freeze, and at MacinawCity the water in Lake Huron below the surface ice was supercooled. It expanded to break through the surface ice and froze into this incredible wave.
The following sequence of photographs, taken by a German photographer named Norbert Rosing, captured what happened when a polar bear encountered his husky dogs tied up outside his Hudson Bay, Canada outpost he was staying at during a photography shoot.
According to Snopes, these photos were taken in 2006 and have been around the Internet a time or two but I thought they were worthy of posting here for those readers who hadn’t seen them. There seems to be some differing opinion as to whether or not the two animals where “playing” or “surviving”.
The first photo is a map depicting the area near Churchill, Manitoba where the incident took place.
When I pull up my swivel chair in front of my computer screen in the mornings and open up my mail box, I never know what I might find. This morning I had quite an array of photos. I picked two that I thought to be interesting and also quite different from each other to share. I don’t think either needs a caption as I believe the photo says it all.
