Is The Earth Cooling Or Warming?
October 12, 2009
At this very moment in time, from my perspective, the earth, or at least St. Petersburg, Florida, is warming. Just go look at the thermometer. When I woke up this morning it was about 78 degrees. It’s nearly 90 degrees right now, so, therefore the earth is warming. What’s even more astounding, I predicted it would warm up today. As a matter of fact, my crude “modeling” tells me that as the sun sets in the West tonight, it will grow increasingly dark.
Quite absurd aren’t I?
One thing we can all agree on is that the climate worldwide changes. It changes subtly and drastically. I have lived in Maine most of my life and while there witnessed temperature fluctuations of 50-60 degrees over a 12-hour period of time. I recall one time going on a fishing trip to Baxter State Park area in June. Over a three day period of time it went from temperatures in the 80s to snow squalls by the third day. Now that’s climate change and I don’t think my campfire had anything to do with it.
So what causes it? The truth is we are just learning about it. Most scientists agree climate changes and they have a laundry list as to all the things that they think can influence our weather. This list includes man’s influence. Some argue man’s influence is the major factor for what some declare are rising global temperatures. Others laugh to think that man’s influence, so tiny in the entire scope of things, would have any effect at all on climate change.
Modeling is one method used to predict what is going to happen with our weather and climate. We can laugh but when your local weatherman gives you the forecast for today and that all important 7-day forecast, do you believe them? Do you put all your eggs in one basket that the weatherman is always right? Of course not. The weatherman uses modeling to make his predictions. Scientists use modeling to predict future climate scenarios. Should we believe them? As they say, the proof is in the pudding, right?
Over the past 11 years the average global temperatures have cooled. Does this prove global warming is a farce? I don’t think so. Personally, I don’t think we have enough data collected over a long enough period of time to be able to accurately forecast anything. 120 years of weather data collected from a planet that some say has been around a few million years might not be enough.
Eleven years of cooling can’t disprove global warming any more than eleven years of warming can prove it. We are now just learning more and more about all those other influences on our climate. Modeling uses scenarios of things we know or believe to be true. These are run through computer program that spits out an answer. How does that go? Garbage in garbage out?
Garbage might be a harsh term to use for the information being used for modeling predictions but if we just look at how those models have fared compared to what has actually happened and it doesn’t look all that good. For one thing none of the models used to predict the end of the world due to man’s influence on the climate, predicted that temperatures globally would increase over the past 11 years. Are these models changed consistently to reflect changes in our climate knowledge base? Perhaps the modeling is done to achieve a desire result. That’s not good.
For those who might be disappointed, the world is not coming to an end because I drive a car and have gas after eating popcorn. Man might cause the demise of the globe in other ways but at this juncture it is quite premature to make such drastic claims that if we don’t something right now, there is no turning back.
Let science, uninfluenced by money and greed, do its thing. Science never “settles” anything. What has made science so great is the continued effort to study and expand our knowledge much through questioning, proving and disproving scientific theory. Science funded and driven by money from special interests only keeps crooked scientists employed.
