“Misinformation thrives in part because of the “information cascade” phenomenon, the way in which ideas gain acceptance by being parroted until eventually we assume they must be true even in the absence of persuasive evidence. ”
Back in the days when I studied logic….this was was as common as it is now…Repeat the lies often enough, and eventually, people will begin to believe the lies…
These days, just put a label on it, like “EWG claimed to have evidence that the farm-raised salmon eaten regularly by millions of Americans contained high levels of PCBs”…….and then publish it in all the liberal papers across the country, and you practically shut down the salmon industry…(this was the example in the article, and the fact was, there were no facts…)
Or, for example, last years tomato scare for botulism…..when you could easily wash every tomato that has been handled, put many growers out of business.
Time and time again, the misrepresentation of “facts” has been published with eager news reporters, writing “anything that sells”…..(the facts just get in the way of these people.) And every day I see people believing the drivel…
Back in the days I did medical research, we had reporters doing articles on some of the research which was new and “interesting”, and the published results in the forthcoming papers was never anything remotely close to the truth….Makes you wonder how they could have got it so wrong….(basically because they didn’t understand it in the first place!)
DDT is another example
The standing POS president is another.
