Why Are People Buying Up Guns?
December 4, 2008
Nationwide gun sales are up 42%. Sales began to flourish as soon as most people figured out Obama was in and McCain was out. The question(s) swirling about the country is why? Why are people buying up guns and ammunition? What’s the motivating factor(s)?
CBS2Chicago says in some rural area of Illinois, gun sales are up 50%. Reporter Mike Flannery reports on several reasons but here’s one that’s sure to wad a few undies of us gun rights believers.
“It’s simply paranoia,” said Thomas Mannard of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. “And it’s irresponsible, from my point of view, to be touting how wonderful this is. More guns definitely equal more death.”
Paranoia - Noun, A nondegenarative, limited, usually chronic psychosis characterized by delusions of persecution or of grandeur, strenuously defended by the afflicted with apparent logic and reason.
Is this anything remotely related to being “bitter and clingy” as “the great one” now jokingly refers? I think it not paranoia when any sane person studies Obama’s past records in dealing with gun issues to fully believe that there may not be any guns available to buy should he have his way. If no guns then he’s made it known he would make sure we can’t get ammunition for them.
For Mannard to assume the role of a psychologist and call the behavior of those buying guns paranoia, he must also look in the mirror and say it’s paranoia that anyone would claim that by selling more guns to law abiding citizens “means more death”.
The difference between the two is simple. Buying a gun out of fear that Obama will take them away is based on fact and past performance of the President Elect. In other words, we have justifiable reason to be concerned over what he will do as president. Fearing having more guns in the hands of lawful citizens is nothing more than unjustified fear, not based in any factual evidence to show that it’s true. By definition then, Mannard is the one who is paranoid and displays his ill behavior by calling rational people paranoid.
I believe people are rushing to buy guns for a lot of reasons and fear of having them taken away is certainly on the list. Concern over increased terrorism in this country because of belief that this administration seems more willing to have tea and crumpets with the terrorists than kill them and rid the world of their scourge.
Owning a gun is also a good investment. With an economy that is on the edge of hell and looking in, you might consider the advice of some who say take your money, while it still is a negotiable item, and purchase tangible items, something that actually will have value, i.e. gold, silver, guns, etc., not paper.
Statistics show us that when unemployment rate rises and the economy struggles, crime rate goes up. Maybe more people are actually fearing the direction our economy is going and are desiring protection for themselves and their family.
I’m sure there are more reasons. Have you bought any more guns or ammunition than what you would consider normal? And if so, would you care to share the reasons why?

Why are people buying guns, when, if the POTUS can outlaw guns, he can take them up and confiscate them as well….if it were in his power to do so. If the 2nd amendment has no meaning and the SCOTUS decision can be discarded, why would we bother to live like rats afraid of the resident cat? Is this indicative of the lack of grit and gumption of the public at large, or is just the concept of fear stronger than the principles that men have died for in fighting the good fight for our freedom? No wonder so many men still live in shame….they aren’t men at all, but mice.
The bully wants to defang us, who is paranoid ? We need to ban government, in world history governments cause more trouble and death than any thing else. Just look to the government approved deaths by alcohol consumption, just look to the approved deaths by the Medical Industrial Complex, and those terrorist Doctors who by accident kill 450,00-750,000 Americans per year.
“The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.” Herbert Spencer 1820-1903
And we could add disarming the fools to shield those men from their folly as well. No thanks, I’ll keep my fangs.
I’m abnormal until I can get a couple more guns. Bought a hand gun this summer as my first gun in 13 years and would like to get more. My friend has
at least 18 different rifles and guns but that’s his ‘normal’.
Two-part reason to begin with. One: for hiking/photos/hunting? The other is
to help educate others that haven’t been around guns. I was astonished by the
lack of knowledge as to why we keep guns.
The other reason was the close, 5 - 4, decision by the SCOTUS in the DC/ Heller case. It’s seem too easy to slip on over to more restrictions on guns from such as close decision and who? will be appointing more SC Justices.
Frankly, I live rurally with a high “critter” population. I want to be able to remove the skunks, bobcats, feral dogs, and raccoons that threaten my livestock. Why shouldn’t I stock up now on guns and ammo? I fully expect BHO and his new government to hike taxes on both guns and ammo as a bare minimum. More likely, they will try to make anything but a single shot firearm impossible for the regular citizen to get.
