The Real Meaning of “Lame Duck” - Milt’s Corner
December 4, 2008
Now that the pond is mostly covered with ice, I have a friend that comes walking up the pond to my place for a hand out every morning. This had been going on for about two weeks now when I realized something was wrong with her right wing. It protrudes much higher then the left one. I don’t know what is the trouble with this beautiful female Black Duck but hunting season has been on and I have heard some shooting near by. She could be a casualty of this activity. She sometimes limps on her right leg a little and one day she made a try to get into the air but could not fly. Now she is my friendly walking duck. Soon there will be no more open water and I wonder what will happen to her then. Anyone got an idea what I can do to help this Walking Duck make it? Milt

I would catch it and give to the boss who lives with me, thats the lady that kicks my ass everyday, she could fix that duck right up. She just fixed another red tailed hawk and once the hawk was healed up she flew it on a tether a few times, and then released it where it had been found and Mr. red tail said thank you and perched on a cottonwood branch and said his goodbys and flew off to hunt. I keep plenty of dead mice I catch in the freezer just for such events. Us hunters don’t just take, but we give back as well.
Bring her in to a cage for the winter…feed her scratch..or find someone who will. Or else leave her for the coyotes and/or foxes…they will appreciate a good meal, too! Or find her a warmer climate…
I shared a tree with a barred owl in my treestand, the other day, deer hunting… seems we were both looking for a meal, and both appreciated each other. When he hooted, it was like he put everything he had into it…and all his feathers stood on end! Reminded me of when a turkey gobbles, he does the same thing…He gave a hoot, and then he left….but not without giving a hoot!
