And I was looking forward to a quicksand story….Ok, I’ll tell it since I’ve got a quicksand bog in my back forty, I’m a little familiar with “mired”….Back in the early sixties, I camped a lot down on the Ichetucknee River, in central Fla…A buddy of mine and his dad had the area to ourselves, back in those days…camping, hunting, and fishing and generally raising hell…Well, one day we swam across the river and came across an abandoned, and blown apart, moonshine still…Freshly done work, it looked like the work of revenuers, or the local competition..and on closer examining of the site, there was a 4×8 piece of plywood, laying on the ground, intact…everything else had been blown to hell and bits and pieces were all over…But that piece of plywood looked good enough to keep, so I lifted it up to take it home, and under the plywood was a perfect circle of quicksand, just small enough that the plywood hid it entirely…And on top of that little circle of quicksand was someone’s HAT!
Freshly left, but no sign of the owner…well, we probed with the longest sticks we had to no avail, since there was no bottom we could feel….or body!
Back in those days there was a lot of violence about the ’shine!

I’m getting a bit mired myself. Jess, starting to feel like I’ve found that Quicksand pit. Gotta move quick or I might sink.

I’m taking the Bow and heading for the hills for a few days. My place in North Central has No phone, No TV, No Cell phone service either. A few days talking with the father is exactly what I need.

George, just remember the cardinal rule for quicksand: you don’t stand and struggle….you’ll only sink deeper. You lay down and “swim”, using your body’s natural buoyancy to keep you from sinking…until you grab a root or some extended hand! Better to just avoid it to begin with! Have a fine trip!

Got something to say?
