War In Northern Maine? - Milt’s Corner
September 8, 2008
These logging camps in the North Maine Wilderness were German war prisoner’s home in the 1940s during the war years. They were brought here after being taken prisoner in Europe. There was no barbed wire, no fencing of any kind and to my knowledge, no prisoners ever escaped. It was a lot better than where they came from. They had warm clothing, a good place to live and plenty of good food. Their job was to cut logs for the paper industry as our loggers had gone in the Armed Forces to fight for our country. The camps were taken by our woodsmen when they came back from the war and are long gone now. There must be more History of these War Camps but I know it not. Milt Inman
