    Going To The Country

Posted by Tom Remington on September 4, 2008

My head is just in a buzz! Hurricane Fay came and went dumping tons of rain. All eyes were focused on Gustav not knowing how big and how bad. He stayed away from me. Now it’s Hanna, Ike and Josephine! Work is crazy and we are right in the real beginning stages of a presidential election.

I needed a break so I decided to head to the country to visit my Uncle Stan. Uncle Stan lives in the country. It’s true. I left Largo and I drove for exactly 3.6 hours before I came to the County road that heads toward my Uncle’s farm.

Once on the County road, I proceeded for exactly 1.1 hours until I came to a dirt road. On the dirt road, I drove for 33 minutes until I came to a hard left. I made the turn and before me was a deeply rutted up road.

I decided the best thing to do was put my wheels in the ruts and proceed cautiously. I bumped and banged over the rutted road for another 16.3 minutes and that’s when I came to a fork in the road. I knew I had to bear right. The road was just now starting to get bad!

I dodged large boulders and worked my way around fallen down trees. I did this for exactly 3 hours and the road became impassible.

I parked my truck and headed down the faint path through the woods that leads to Uncle Stan’s. After walking for exactly 12.7 minutes, I came to a brook that was too wide to easily jump across. Tied into the limb of a tree nearby was a rope swing. I grabbed the rope and swung like Tarzan over the brook, let go once I reached the other side and landed squarely on my feet.

From there I could make out Uncle Stan’s farm and barn if I bobbed my head around to see through the dense forest. Just as I reached the edge of the field, I climbed a medium sized oak tree to look around. It wasn’t the end of the earth but I could see it from there! Two things Uncle Stan had that I didn’t like and I knew they didn’t like me - a nasty mongrel dog and an ugly one-horned bull.

I stayed in the tree for some time and couldn’t lay my eyes on either animal, so I hollered as loud as I could, “H-e-l-l-o up at the farm! Is anybody h-o-m-e?”

I waited patiently but heard nothing. Not even a bark from Spike or a bay from Ferdinand.

Before coming down from the tree, I yelled several more times and still got no reply.

Cautiously, I approached the farm house. If you’ve never lived in the country, you wouldn’t realize that you don’t just brazenly walk up unannounced to anybody in their home. They live in the country for a reason! That’s why I stayed in the tree and yelled.

Still seeing nobody around, I stepped up onto the long piazza that wrapped around three sides of the old farm house. I approached the kitchen door to knock and see if Uncle Stan and Aunt Mable were around and that’s when I noticed a note nailed to the front door. This is what it said:

“Gone to the country for the weekend!”
