Why Do We “Keep and Bear Arms”? Part 2

July 10, 2008

Guns And the Supreme CourtLast week just before the Independence Day celebration, I directed you to a story by Larry Elder at TownHall.com - “Why Do We “Keep and Bear Arms”? Part I. In Part I, Elder takes us through a brief history of the creation of the Second Amendment and then affirms the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court last month ruling the Washington, D.C. gun ban as unconstitutional - District of Columbia vs. Heller.

Today, Elder presents Part II of “Why We Keep and Bear Arms”?. Part II asks if the Washington, D.C. gun ban, in existence for 30 years, worked. Elder doesn’t believe it did and presents evidence to support that. He even presents information straight from the criminal’s mouth on what they think of robbing a house thinking the owners might be “keeping and bearing arms”.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice surveyed 2,000 felons in state prisons. It asked whether “one reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime.” Seventy-four percent of the felons said yes.

All of this is interesting information and personally I tend to agree that crooks knowing that a homeowner is armed, will be deterred. But the truth still remains that we have the right to keep and bear arms regardless of Washington, D.C.’s crime rate or any others.
