Mayor Ray Nagin And His Gun Handling Expertise

February 15, 2008

Have you seen this picture yet?

Mayor Ray Nagin wielding an assault rifle

If found the photo, which seems to be taken from a video, at NOLA.com. You can see a television report that shows video to put the entire thing in better context.

If nothing else, he’s at least guilty of ignorant handling of a weapon. What do you think? Comment below.

I’m guessing he’s never taken a hunter safety course. Perhaps he should sign up for one.

Now that’s a great idea. Maybe we should all send the governor an email suggesting just such. What a great PR opportunity for him.

I’ve put a blog entry on this on my blog which gives my opinion on the matter. Nagin has a long history of doing and saying stupid things and will continue to embarrass New Orleans.

Did you even look at the video from the news report? Talk about something being taken totally out of context. Watch the video and you will see that the picture represents a fraction of a second.

The mayor was moving his rifle from a port arms position standing next to the chief, to turning and facing the chief and dropping the rifle to a waist high horizontal position. He was not standing there pointing his rifle at the cheif! I don’t like Nagin or his policies, but this is not something you can creditably beat him up over.

Jon, I have watched the video and it actually reinforces my position that Nagin handled the weapon in a patently unsafe manner. Do you realize that the muzzle velocity of that weapon is measured in milliseconds? So the “fraction of a second” in which he pointed the gun at Riley AS WELL AS members of the media (as he swept the gun from his left to his right) would be enough time to have fired off more than one round that would have more than likely injured, if not killed, someone if the gun had been loaded.

You do not, I repeat DO NOT point a gun at anyone even for a FRACTION OF A SECOND. You do not, I repeat DO NOT, sweep a gun around causing the weapon to be pointed at someone even for a FRACTION OF A SECOND.

In short, the video shows quite clearly Nagin handling the weapon in an unsafe manner. Rather than apologize for it, he attacks those who exposed his irresponsibility. Nagin has a long history of blaming others rather than take responsibility for his stupid words and deeds.

Matt, Nagin siging up for a hunter safety course or even a weapon safety course (a military or FBI course would be more appopriate for the weapon he was handling) would be an admission by Nagin that he was in the wrong and his ego won’t allow him to do that.

I will concede the fact that the photograph is somewhat taken out of context and does upon freezing that frame, make it APPEAR as though he was pointing the weapon at the Chief of Police.

However, I have to agree with Carl and what I pointed out in the original blog that Nagin’s handling of the weapon was ignorant and inappropriate.

The photograph does show poor weapons-handling technique – undeniably. All the more reason it never should have been published. Nagin may not be the brightest but his ignorance pales in comparison to the trash-rag Times-Picayune that published this photo and then did a front-page “correction” the next day. I don’t know if anybody else reads their daily “corrections” section but, aside from the horrible copy editing, misspellings and ungrammatical sentence structures that litter the T-P like so much Katrina debris, they ROUTINELY get the facts wrong and then have to correct and retract. Now Nagin is feeling threatened by a racist group, in part because of this photo having been published. It’s as if they don’t really believe their paper has any importance or that anyone reads it, which probably ought to be the case.
