Supreme Court To Decide Today Whether To Hear D.C. Gun Ban Case
November 13, 2007
Today the United States Supreme Court is supposed to decide whether it will hear the appeal of the overturned Washington, D.C. gun ban. For 31 years, D.C. has, for all intent and purposes, banned the ownership of guns. That ban was challenged in a District Appeals Court and ruled unconstitutional.
Today could mark the beginning of one of the biggest moments in American history. Should SCOTUS decided to hear this case, it could have sweeping consequences nationwide no matter what the outcome. History has shown that it would be unusual for SCOTUS would hear the case as nearly every other case has been left up to the lower courts. Should the case be heard, we could once and for all have a ruling on just what the Supreme Court determines to be the definition of the Second Amendment. In short, is the Second Amendment giving the states the right to form militias or was it intended to guarantee individuals the right to keep and bear arms?
I’m betting that the Supreme Court will not hear this appeal and allow the lower court ruling to stand. This of course would be great news for those in Washington, D.C. who would like to exercise their right and would also set precedence for other states to appeal weapons bans.
Regardless, this is a big day in the history of this country. I’ll keep you posted.
