Bow Hunter Tells His Story Of Grizzly Bear Attack

Posted by Tom Remington on September 16, 2007

Growling Grizzly BearYesterday I told you about a Montana bow hunter who was attacked by a grizzly bear just outside the Yellowstone National Park and near the Gallatin National Park. Today, Dustin Flack of Belgrade retells his story. You can read the entire article in the Great Falls Tribune.

It seems that while on a bow hunt, Flack first caught a glimpse of the mother grizzly and her three cubs out of the corner of his eye. They were between 20 and 25 yards from him and heading directly at him. Flack didn’t believe the bear knew he was there at that time.

He stood behind a tree said to be about 8 inches in diameter but when the bear was directly on the other side of the bear, Flack decided he had better climb up the tree. The bear attacked.

“She was up on her back legs, trying to bite me,”

Flack attempted to scream and kick the bear in the face. That’s when the grizzly first bit his toes and then sunk a bite deep to the bone through his shin and calf muscles. He described the bear as having “ripped the tree in half” and then pulled him down out of it.

When he hit the ground, he said he curled up into a fetal position placing his hands behind his neck and remained motionless. Flack said the bear bit or clawed his back as well and then the bear laid his head on Flack’s cheek while he laid their trying to play dead, listening to the bear breathe.

Soon, the bear was gone. Flack tied a handkerchief around his leg wound and walked two miles out to his vehicle. He met a man walking in on the trail near his vehicle that helped him to his car and called an ambulance.

Flack underwent surgery and received a lot of stitches.
