Virginia Tech Killer Identified
April 17, 2007
According to ABC News, the killer of 32 at Virginia Tech University in Blackburn, Virginia has been identified.
He is Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old resident alien of the United States, as first reported by ABC News.
Cho is a South Korean national, a Virginia Tech senior majoring in English and the man who killed 33 people — inlcuding himself — on the Virginia Tech campus Monday.
Cho used two weapons. A 9mm Glock and a .22 pistol. According to ABC, Cho killed two people in a dormitory, then returned to his dormitory to rearm.
Sources tell ABC News that Cho killed two people in a dorm room, returned to his own dorm room where he re-armed and left a “disturbing note” before entering a classroom building on the other side of campus to continue his rampage.
Evidence is still being gathered. About the only information available on the guns is that fingerprints verified one of the guns was used to kill some of the students. Officials also found a receipt in the killer’s backpack for the 9 mm Glock.

Both guns were legally purchased, one month apart.
VA has a one-a-month rule on handguns, and also has a State Trooper firearms check along with the federal check.
This was a very disturbed kid who planned a long time to do a lot of violence. A very sad situation. I live in Virginia, and my kids are college age and I know quite a few kids at Virginia Tech which is (and will remain) a terrific school. I am not sure there are many “lessons” to learn here other than a school or business needs to go into a complete lockdown mode if a shooter is believed to be loose in the building or the area. Virginia Tech failed miserably in that regard.

Thanks for that update, P!
I’m not sure it matters whether he bought the guns legally or illegally. He obviously had no problem with breaking the law that makes killing people illegal, so I’m guessing he wouldn’t have had an issue with breaking the law that would have made buying a gun illegal.
In the end, it’s not the gun that is the problem, it is the intention of the person holding the gun. I won’t get started here, but for those that are interested, there’s a new post over on the blog I write about this subject.
