Bear Education Started In New Jersey
April 3, 2007
Who knows what the cost is going to be to taxpayers as Department of Environmental Protection personnel go around neighborhoods passing out information and talking to people about how to co-exist with bears. Of course it’s a joke to think the ideology of urban dwellers can have the best of both worlds.
The short of it, bears are too numerous in some parts of New Jersey and traditionally bear hunting is a proven tool to limit that growth or reduce it. New Jersey had such a plan until Gov. Corzine directed DEP head Lisa Jackson to disregard the court approved bear management plan. They opted to spend millions of dollars exploring non-lethal ways to deal with bears.
They’ve tried bear-proof garbage cans but nobody thought handles were needed on the cans. The cans are too heavy and people don’t like them but DEP doesn’t care. They’re looking into birth control, which is too expensive and doesn’t work and now agents are canvassing neighborhoods going door to door to tell people how to live with bears. What’s the cost of printing information that will just end up in the same bear-proof garbage cans? What a joke actually!
The New Jersey Herald has a story about the event over the past weekend. It’s hilarious and the article ends this way.
He said he hopes the latest education campaign will have a tangible effect on the neighborhood.
“Some people, they just don’t care,” he said.
Sorry! An idealist hopes it will help and states that SOME people just don’t care. A realist knows it will have no effect, will cost taxpayers millions not even to mention the increased property damages and personal injury. But it needs to be said that it is not correct that some people don’t care. The vast majority of people don’t care. That’s why this is a big expensive joke.
