Does Anyone Know Where This Happened?

November 14, 2006

Blog reader Brian Wagner sent along these photos of a bear found in a den in a cornfield and wants to know if anyone knows where it took place. Being my schedule is such that I can’t take time to research, I thought I would leave it up to my readers. Leave your comments, please if you can assist. Thanks!

The location is Farmington, Wisconsin near the border of Wisconsin-Minnesota (about 40 miles to the Twin Cities in MN)

I went onto this site hoping to find photos of live black bears and all I find is dead bears hunted by you complete losers. Give the bear a gun and see how you go. You disgust me.

Haha….somehow I think that the lack of opposable thumbs would still put the bear a decided disadvantage.

Cool beans!!!!! Thanks, M! I knew somebody would cough it up sooner or later.

This bear was near Osceola (Farmington), WI, at the Troy DeRosier farm in NW Wisconsin. The man holding the bear’s head in one of the photos is Troy.

[...] The Black Bear Blog had a series of photos of a bear den found in a field and the readers were able to identify where these photos came from. I have no idea where these photos were taken but I’m sure an alert reader does. [...]

This bear was found 10 miles north of Washburn Illinois when a farmers tractor sunk into the ground. When he got out of the tractor he heard growling and immediately called police, who then called Illinois DNR.

Was there ever a final answer of where this actually happened with the Bear getting caught under the tire of a farm tractor?

Looks like it happened in Illinonsin or is that Wiscollinois? Seems the general consensus puts it either in the Farmington, Wisconsin area near the Minnesota border or the Washburn, Illinois area.

I don’t think it is that unusual that a bear would den up in a corn field. In Maine, black bear will move into a corn field and stay right there gorging himself on corn until someone or something rousts him out.

We may actually have two or more stories being confirmed. This Wisconsin location seems to have someone willing to claim that Troy is one of the photos – Troy DeRosier who owns the farm.

That’s where I’ll put my money until someone can convince me otherwise.

The photos were from the Troy Derosier farm in Farmington WI. A story about it was written by my wife for The Country Today newspaper. http://www.thecountrytoday.com

Hey Jennifer, First of all this wasn’t hunting, it was a bear caught under or living under a combine. Department of Natural Resources said to shoot it. Second, it’s an animal which can be legally hunted. If it’s been a while, go read your bible, animals were put on this earth for people to eat and for man to consume. I presume you go to the grocery and buy your meat already killed and cleaned and wrapped up in a nice white piece of styrofaom! Joboo

[...] The email story that has been traveling at cyber speed around the Internet and one of which I posted the photos, showing a bear trapped under the wheel of a combine, is a hoax according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. WJBC AM Radio has a short item. If you’ve seen an email that shows a large black bear trapped under a combine in a cornfield, the state Department of Natural Resources says it’s a hoax. In some versions, the email claims that the incident happened in rural Illinois. Others say it was in Wisconsin. The email references DNR, but the agency says that incident of a bear being trapped did not happen in Illinois. [...]

    Yes,
I was told that the bear was found in taylorville Ill is this true ?
Has anyone found any bears in Illinois? And what is a honey bear? I was told they were released in ILL.
Also why was the bear shot and not just caught and moved to a different location? I agree with Jennifer and think killing it was terrible.

Seeing these pictures above makes my stomach turn. First this helpless bear trapped under the farm machinery; an accident to be sure but nonetheless sad. But to see the grinning jerk in the last picture, apparently very happy with his ear to ear grin, propping up the head of the now dead bear, just makes me sick. how anyone born on this earth can find enjoyment and amusement over the death of a beautiful creature like this poor black bear, just leaves me scratching my head. Does the depart of natural resources saying “shoot it” make it right or moral? The ignorance and lack of compassion shown in this incident just make me shake my head. Sad life that Mr. Smiley has, and anyone else involved in the needless killing of this bear.

    RELAX ALLYOU NON-HUNTERS!
FIRST, THE DNR SAID TO SHOOT IT, YOU DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS INJURED OR WHAT AFFECT THIS DISRUPTION WOULD OR COULD HAVE ON THE ANIMAL.
SECOND- YOU CAN BUY MOST MEAT AT GROCERY STORES OR BUTCHER SHOPS BUT THE “SPORT” OF HUNTING IS STILL AROUND AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED. THOSE WHO ARE SICK ABOUT THIS, I AGREE WITH JOB0043, YOU PROBABLY EAT YOUR MEAT ALREADY KILLED AND PACKAGED MINUS ALL THE BLOOD AT THE STORE! DO YOU THINK KILLING AND EATING COWS IS TERRIBLE ALSO. WHAT ABOUT PIGS?

As an America I served my county and defended our rights. I will continue to hunt and those who don’t it’s you right not to. I guess we will as true americans simply disagree on this point. So stay out of my way in the woods.

I used to hunt as a young boy but as I got older I found that I liked the flora and the fauna more than I liked the kill. I have always been a tough guy but and I’m not against hunting but I have to agree that I hate to see a creature as beautiful as a bear destroyed. I can’t believe that they are going to grow in number the way the world is today.

  24. Adiefender on February 1st, 2008 3:21 pm

If animals are not harvisted, they will grow in numbers and there will be more stories of people gettng mauled and being hit by cars or even worse…..They starve to death!

Got something to say?
