Bear Hunting Opens In North Carolina

Today, bear season opens in North Carolina. On Thursday it will open in one of the state’s mountain sancturaries between Mt. Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Against the wishes of some, NC officials say there are a few too many bears roaming the woods in this area, so they have opted to offer bear tags for this region selected by lottery. The hunt will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays beginning the 19th and run for 8 weeks.

Many years ago with a rapidly declining bear population North Carolina Wildlife decided to set up bear sanctuaries across the state in the middle of prime bear country. These sanctuaries were actual designed more as bear incubators to help the population sustain itself. Bears would live inside these sanctuaries and as the population grew they would expand into surrounding bear habitat outside of the sanctuary. [...]
