Delaware’s Deer Problem, Farmers and Hunters
May 1, 2006
Delaware’s farmers are taking a beating from crop damage. There are so many deer in some areas that crop damage is costing agricultural businesses millions of dollars annually.
Rep. John C. Atkins, (R) Millsboro, has introduced House Bill 387 which would let farmers shoot deer that are damaging their crops no matter what time of year.
It is completely understandable that farmers need to protect their crops. What I don’t understand is why better management plans aren’t put in place to allow hunters the opportunity to reduce herd sizes. I’m sure farmers have better things to do with their time than dealing with shooting and disposing of deer they’ve had to kill.
If there aren’t enough able and willing hunters in the state of Delaware to resolve the problem, then other methods should be employed. This doesn’t mean prohibiting the farmer from protecting his crops but here’s an example of having the means in place to solve a deer overpopulation problem yet not utilizing it. Sounds a bit spiteful to me.

I have a suggestion:
Adopt a Hunter from Canada Program. Just feed me and I will attempt to do the rest. Will hunt for free!
Bill,
That’s my point exactly and I think your idea is a good one.
i think there should be a sheet handed out every year to volunter hunters who live in delaware of a farmer who needs deer controlled on his/hers land. You would call the farmer and he picks a few hunters to take care of his property and manage the deer every year. Reason being that there people like me that have no where to hunt but state land and its over abundance with man more then deer.
Why don’t we both check and see if there are any programs in Delaware that do such a thing. I know some states have such landowner relations programs where the landowners wishing to have hunters on their land are put on a list so that it helps the exact cause you are describing.
Let me also see if I can find out which states have such a program and maybe direct you to that for information.
email me if a farmer in delaware needs some deer managed i love to bow hunt and have no place to hunt. last year i donated a 2 deer to feed the needy during thanksgiving and still had a freezer full.
