Wyoming Still Feeding Elk
April 4, 2006
Typically elk begin retreating to the high ground by April 1 but they are still hanging around. Officials say this winter has been more of a typical winter with heavy snows in the higher elevations forcing the elk to descend into the lowlands in search of food.
There are 22 state-run feeding grounds and the National Elk Refuge is the largest of them, this winter feeding nearly 7,000 elk. Officials estimate that the elk will begin their retreat in another week to ten days.
